Common questions about Business Insurance:

1. Do I need Workers Compensation insurance and what does it cover?

Workers compensation covers you in case your employees get injured. Say you own a car shop and have just 1 employee. He signs all the new employee paperwork and safety forms. Then he works on a car without his safety glasses, gets metal in his eye and needs to see a doctor, have surgery or worse. What then? Although he signed papers and didn’t follow protocol you could be sued and held responsible for those expenses. Every state has rules on when you must have workers compensation insurance. For example, in Missouri you don’t need it if you have 5 or less employees but is it worthwhile before that…sure, per our example.

2. Do I really need to switch my auto insurance to a commercial policy?

If you are using your vehicle for your business then it needs to have a commercial policy. Pizza delivery people are a great example. You are definitely utilizing your car for business purposes and if you were to get into an accident while at work the Claims Representative could deny your claim because it’s for business use and not personal use. This one is tricky and can be costly if you’re not under the right type of policy.

3. What is Professional Liability insurance?

This one is more like Errors and Omissions coverage called E&O for insurance professionals. It helps cover you if your company is one that gives out professional advice. Examples: an Accountant, Attorney, Real estate brokers, etc.). I think we can all see where issues could arise in these types of professions.
